Transportion for Rual kids
Red Bluff District transportation department has decide to make a practice of selecting a few areas to stop bus transportation to. They are being selective as to what kids can have a bus and whom can't. There is no straight forward lines drawn, so it can change at anytime if someone in the department decides. They go 28 miles in one direction for 8 kids, but refuse to go 10 3/4 mile leaving 13 that are closer with no transportation. These kids come from homes that are making it from check to check, disabled parents, a few have to hire a drive to do the once a month shopping. These kids are full of dreams and want to become something and do something with their lives. A few of them are on the school radio, leadership program, machine shop owners, will known cheifs running the nicer restaurants, working hard to go into the medical world. With the high schools ROP classes these kids have a chance to make their dreams come true. In home schooling they are not able to attend these programs. Thedistrict makes the comment that busing is a pillage not a right. Then how do they chose who gets an education and who doesn't?They say if they run the bus that little bit more they will have to cut a teacher. The state does pay a portion of their transportation cost back to the district. They say its budget cuts, look what the 13 kids = 390 dollars a day, 72,000 a 180 school year. To afford the bus cut the town kids that for twenty dollars can ride a city bus-we do not have access to one. The school makes a policy to pick up inter county transferees not just for school but after school programs as will. These kids are coming from other school areas, I always thought that inter county transfers meant the parents were responsible for transporting not the school. So there is the money for the kids in rural areas to ride to school and not be punished. They would also have the money still for their teachers. Anyone teacher is making 390 dollars a day we need to be reviewing whats going on in the budgets at our schools. There is a school willing and able to help but they will not communicate with them at all. They had a contract with this school for a MT bus that did pick up the kids and deliver them to a safer location for the city bus to pick up. The contracted price may been high for this budget time, but RBHS never communicated to lower it. The other school is not only willing to work and lower the cost, but is in shock that RBHS would leave 13 kids behind. The people from both schools can't believe this as happened and fell that it could happen to others without warning. This transportation department feels so above the law that they feel they don't need to address the need to transport the special ed children in this group either. Even though the law clearly states they have to transport any child that is in need of special learning. My petition is to let these people know that we the people feel they are being unfair to this group of kids. THE FORGOTTEN 13 at Red Bluff High. We do not want them doing this to other kids as will. So please sigh and let the School Board in this Ca area know that we do not like whats happening and to stop this abuse of power and give the kids their Education back.
