HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS IN PIERCE COUNTY...
It is time for a multi-jurisdictional approach to the problem with homelessness in Pierce County, Washington. Please show your support by signing this petition today!
After failing to solicit the support of Pierce County Government to address the growing problem with homeless encampments in unincorporated Pierce County, community Activist Stacy Emerson produced a video and uploaded it to YouTube as a means of forcing the issue.
The video provides a tour of 10 homeless camps spanning 3 vacant parcels located behind Kmart at 72nd St E and Portland Avenue East. It delves into the crime associated with the residents of the camps, including heroine use, biohazard waste, accumulated solid waste and worse, a plea scribbled on the detached truck bed which offers drugs and money in exchange for sex with a child--boy or girl, under the age of 6.
Within a few days of publishing, the video inspired two articles by The News Tribune - both running on Monday, October 30, 2007. Journalist Scott Fontaine's article "Unplanned side effects?" appeared on the cover, while Kathleen Merryman's article "Tacoma shows how to clean up homeless camps" ran on B6. By 8:00 a.m. the story was picked up by KIRO Radio, KOMO Radio and KOMO TV News.
Several days later Ms. Emerson started receiving a few emails from local elected officials, the most recent from Pierce County Councilmember Barbara Gelman who invited Ms. Emerson to attend the special joint meeting between Pierce County's Public Safety & Humane Services Committee (PSHS) and Tacoma City's PSHS committee (scheduled by Tacoma City in response to the issue raised by the video...?). See meeting recap here.
