Dear NCAA Division I College Football Fans,
My name is Troy Richardson, and I am a proud member of a division 1 program that played in what is now known as a BCS bowl game. Fellow former players from many great universities around the country including Florida, Arizona State, UCLA, Boise State, Utah, USC, Kansas, Weber State, Oregon State, Oregon, Stanford, Virgina Tech, Miami, Texas, SMU, Notre Dame and others have joined together to petition the NCAA, the BCS and the United States Congress to finally step up and create a playoff system for Division I college football. This petition will be presented to these entities as well as the office of United States Senator Orrin Hatch (Utah).

Our open letter:
We are so very tired of the BCS and their ratings system. Every year, this invisible group of people get behind closed doors and determine the fate of hard working student athletes, coaches and fans. Millions of fans complain every year how the system is broken. The sports writers fill their columns with line after line of statistics and suggestions, but they never listen to the outcry for a new way, a FAIR way, to crown the NCAA Division 1 National Champion for Football.
Did you know that, aside from Division I football, every single college sport ends with a champion determined through some kind of play-off system? Even the lower divisions of football have their champions confirmed by the action on the field, not through backroom negotiations and politics.
Like you, we are tired of screaming and not being heard. So let's do something about it. Our goal is to start a petition and get one million electronic signatures by the start of this year's Bowl Season. We want to submit this petition live on ESPN and challenge all comers to convince the American sports fan why we should be denied a play-off to determine a National Champion like every other college sport. We will also be more than ready to take this issue to court, if that indeed must be done.
Imagine this: Every week, there are some 50 games being played in Division 1. There 120 teams representing 11 conferences, including the three independents (Notre Dame, Navy and Army). Each game has from 10,000 to 110,000 plus screaming fans attending the games, with millions more who watch from the comfort of their homes. The number of potential signatures is huge.
My challenge isn't to get people to agree to change the BCS; it's getting the petition in front of those thirsting for a real play-off.
The play-off concept is very simple, and anyone who says this "can't be done" is either being intellectually dishonest, or lacks intellect altogether.
The days of a split National Championship would be gone forever. And so would the discrimination of the so called sub-conference football programs. It%u2019s time, once and for all, to have an open debate in front of the college football world and crown a true National Champion.
I have always said, I would rather USC or Florida or LSU finish 2nd or 4th or even 20th if it meant that a true championship was earned and not appointed. I wouldn't want the title to be "debatable" as we have had since the flawed BCS system was created. The BCS Champion is just that, the Champion of the BCS ratings system. Whenever you have 1 or even 2 loss teams in the final game, getting there is subjective. Then there are other scenarios that are equally unfair. When USC, Oklahoma and Auburn were all undefeated, Auburn got left behind and had no chance at a title.
There is no need for me to preach to the choir. Lets get this thing cranked up and see where it goes. The petition is up, the demand is high and the results will be driven by the fans. Our next step is spreading the word. Please help by sending this to everyone you know and even those you have never met. Everyone who loves competition will agree to our premise:
LET"S SETTLE THIS ON THE FIELD!
