Should the FDA be allowed to regulate Nicotine?
Recently Congress passed a law that was signed by the President giving the FDA the responsibilty to regulate Nicotine levels in cigarettes. The FDA's mandate has always been to prevent products that are unhealthy from being sold to the citizens of the United States. Now, based on the new law, they are responsible for regulating a product that is known to cause death to its' users. If it was the intent of Congress and The President to truly prevent a product that has proved to be deadly from being sold to the U.S. Population, they would have allowed the FDA to ban the product. However, the bill specifically prevents the FDA from banning Tobacco. Therefore, the FDA should not have the authority to involve itself in tobacco at all. The only reason Phillip Morris was a backer of this bill is that it will serve to maintain its' market share by making it next to impossible for new entrants in the cigarette business. They can maintain their near monopoly of the cigarette business in the USA. In conclusion, the FDA should not be allowed to regulate tobacco. Please vote NO and urge the Courts to enter the fray to find this new law unconstitutional!!!!
