Having grown up surrounded by the natural beauty and diverse wildlife of DeSoto, I am deeply troubled by the recent announcement from the City of DeSoto regarding their plan to reduce the coyote population through lethal measures. These plans not only conflict with my personal beliefs but also with the ethical and ecological values that our community stands for.

Coyotes are integral to our ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our natural surroundings by controlling rodent populations and contributing to the overall health of the environment. Scientific research consistently debunks the effectiveness of lethal control as a sustainable solution. In fact, it often leads to the counterproductive outcome of increased coyote populations over time as they breed in response to population declines.

Instead of resorting to lethal methods, the City of DeSoto should consider humane and science-based alternatives. Partnering with local wildlife organizations could provide effective, non-lethal solutions, such as hazing education, habitat management, and the implementation of community coexistence programs. Informing and educating residents about how to coexist safely with coyotes is crucial to preventing conflicts and fostering a culture of understanding and respect for these animals.

Furthermore, it is essential to acknowledge that many taxpayers do not wish to see their tax dollars spent on the unnecessary killing of wildlife, especially when viable, compassionate alternatives exist. These alternatives not only preserve the lives of coyotes but also reflect the humane values we hold dear as a community.

I urge the City of DeSoto to reconsider their approach and halt the implementation of lethal control measures. Let's work together to ensure that our community can coexist peacefully with all forms of wildlife. Please join me in making a stand for the wildlife we cherish and sign this petition to demand humane, ethical, and effective solutions for managing the coyote population in DeSoto.
