One significant issue related to our cause is the separation of calves from their mothers, where they spend most of their lives in isolation. Calves are also subjected to having their horns cut off with a hot iron instead of using anesthesia. Another common practice in the dairy industry is docking cows' tails, either with scissors or, as is sometimes done, by tying a rope or rubber band around them and letting the tissue die and fall off on its own. They are also subjected to brutal deaths after several years of constant gestation and lactation, and their milk production is reduced. Like cows in the meat industry, those in the dairy industry end up in the slaughterhouse in order to sell their meat. The life expectancy of these animals is 25 years, but in these industries they never reach that age.
