Newfoundland: Keep the Libraries Open!

  • par: Amelia Meister

Newfoundland recently announced in their most recent budget the closing of over half of their library branches province wide. Libraries are hubs of education, culture and necessary services in any community. While the library system in Newfoundland is not functioning at its optimal ability, closing branches is not the answer to the problem.

Communities, especially rural, isolated communities, need access to libraries in their communities. Travelling to a library is often not possible and libraries provide so many services to their communities. They are essential public institutions and must be preserved.

Sign now to protect libraries in Newfoundland. By signing today you are sending a strong message that libraries hold a valuable and essential place in all communities.

To the Honourable Eric Kirby,

As someone who believes strongly in the community benefit of libraries I urge you to stop the closure of over half of the branches in Newfoundland.

Libraries provide essential community services. While the system in Newfoundland has not been functioning efficiently, you are taking a dangerously "easy" way out of the problem. By closing branches you are further isolating rural communities from essential information services.

Closing library branches is not the answer to the problem in Newfoundland. Investing more in the existing library systems and reaping the long-term social and economic gain from libraries is key.
