SINGAPORE: SAYING "NO" TO PLASTIC DISTRIBUTION IN GROCERY STORES

It has recently come to my concern about the overwhelming number of single-use plastic bags being distributed to grocery store customers in Singapore.

I never really thought much about it at first, until I noticed just how many plastic bags were stocked behind the cashiers of the grocery stores. I remember being frozen in shock, unable to move. It was a lot.

According to Chanel News Asia (CNA), Singapore shoppers take approximately 820 million plastic bags from grocery stores each year. 820 MILLION!

Single-use plastic bags produce SO MUCH greenhouse gas emissions when they are manufactured, and this even contributes to CLIMATE CHANGE! Additionally, these plastic bags do NEGATIVELY impact many, many animals in the world. This is not just an issue in Singapore, it is a GLOBAL issue.

Therefore, Singapore can do its part in helping the environment by dismissing the distribution of plastic bags to customers in grocery stores. Singapore can require shoppers to bring THEIR OWN REUSABLE BAGS when doing their grocery shopping, or even set prices to plastic bags in ALL of their grocery stores, which would ultimately urge shoppers to bring their own bags...no one will want to pay extra money. Because plastic bags are necessary for disposing of home-trash, I think that for every grocery purchase, a maximum of ONE plastic bag can be provided to the customers. Other than that, they would have to bring their own bags.

I am aware that there are already grocery stores in Singapore that require customers to pay a certain price for plastic bags, such as FairPrice Singapore. However, to bring a bigger IMPACT to the environment, we need ALL grocery stores to the actions as I mentioned above.

This petition is for the Singapore Government because they have the power to enforce the actions that I mentioned above. Singapore can do its own little part in saving the world from future consequences involving the usage of single-use plastic bags.

(Please note that grocery stores could even include small convenience stores as well, such as Seven Eleven)
