Another Pristine Island Has Been Hit by an Oil Spill - And It Threatens to Destroy the Ecosystem

If you take a look at a map of the Americas and slowly trace the pacific coastline down through the United States, Canada, Central America and so forth, you will eventually make it to Chile's Patagonia. The country's southernmost region is an archipelago of islands surrounded by dark blue seas and dotted with lakes of every color of blue.

Unlike other regions both in Chile and other parts of the world, wildlife and nature still reign virtually uncontested and its relatively untouched environment serves as a haven for many animal species, including birds and marine mammals.

Yet, one island in Patagonia may not be a safe haven at all anymore, it could end up being just the opposite. Reports have come in that Guarello Island, a small remote island just south of Bernardo O'Higgins National Park has suffered a terrible oil spill that has already leaked around 10,000 gallons.

Leaks are devastating to a marine ecosystem because the thick oil coats the surface of the water blocking light from making its way into the sea. Light, which is crucial for the survival of all living things. The oil can also block marine mammals from breathing properly when they come up for air in an oil spill and can cover sea birds in a thick coat of grease making it impossible for them to move.

Mining company, CAP, responsible for the devastating leak has said they are cooperating with the Chilean government and the Chilean navy has said they have already begun an investigation. But whatever they find, the damage to this pristine area of the world will have already been done. CAP should be held responsible by authorities for this environmental catastrophe and made to pay to help the ecosystem recover.

Please sign the petition and demand that the government of Chile hold CAP responsible for their negligence and make them pay for what they have done.
