Stop the deep dredge!

Unless environmentalists win their lawsuit, Miami's Biscayne Bay will be drilled and blasted for a two full years on behalf of the controversial "deep dredge." Using a flawed "if you build it, they will come" model, Florida boosters think a deeper Miami port will attract bigger ships and more money to the south of the state. But there's no reliable evidence that the few ships large enough to warrant the dredge will choose Miami as their destination.

Environmental plaintiffs, including the Tropical Audubon Society say the deep dredge will enact irreversible damage on the bay's fragile eco-system and directly impact five acres of virgin reef. Silt kicked up by the dredging is destined to damage sea grass beds and suffocate fish. Residents of nearby Fisher Island are also worried the the project will destroy their sea wall and compromise water quality. Tell Florida to stop the deep dredge!
We the undersigned ask that you listen carefully to the many environmentalists and Fisher Island residents concerned about the impacts of the proposed deep dredge. Harbor deepenings have a long, ugly history of killing fish, marine mammals, and releasing toxins into the public water supply. You are gambling with precious natural resources that, once lost, can never be recovered. There is no proof that the big ships you hope for will ever arrive in Miami. Florida is not ready for this project. Please rethink it.
