Support the people of Vermont’s right to know about GMOs in their food

The Grocery Manufacturers Association and its allies, which include the Snack Food Association, the International Dairy Foods Association and the National Association of Manufacturers, are suing the state of Vermont for wanting to give its citizens the right to know if GMO products are in their food.

The legal challenge was launched after Vermont passed a GMO labeling law that did not require other states to go first. Connecticut and Maine passed GMO labeling legislation similar to that of Vermont last year but it is on hold until other states enact similar legislation.

The fight over GMOs in the United States comes after more than 60 countries around the world have passed laws that require labeling of GMO foods.

However, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and its allies claim Vermont's law is misguided, expensive and would violate the First Amendment by restricting the commercial speech rights of food companies to label (or, more accurately, not label) their products.

The people of Vermont have the right to know if GMO products are in their food! The Grocery Manufacturers Association and its allies should respect the democratic rights of the citizens of Vermont and drop the charges.
