While battery cages are, possibly, banned in the UK, "enriched" cages, which may not be much better, may still be allowed. This is cruel and wrong.
As a (near) vegan, I will say that generally (perhaps, with exceptions) we don't need to eat any eggs. Even free-range systems and RSPCA-approved farms can still do things that are cruel and unethical to their chickens 🐓 (e.g. sending the chickens 🐓 to slaughter and gassing and shredding male chicks 🐤 alive because they can't lay and aren't wanted for breeding). However, at least the best welfare standards and treatment of all chickens 🐓 and all farm animals (all sentient beings, for that matter) would be a step in the right direction.
The grocery stores (Asda, Sainsbury's, Lidl's and Aldi) banning and ending the sales of all caged eggs could send the message out, discontinue the support of caged egg farming with them and their customers (through the grocery stores), lead to welfare improvements and mean that those who don't have a lot of money, or don't have a lot on them, don't have to deal with the guilt, anxiety, sadness and other negative feelings that would otherwise come after their buying of caged eggs. Any unwanted, unsaleable caged eggs could also be donated to the needy and/or to soup kitchens, or given to animal sanctuaries for their chickens to eat (it is natural for chickens to eat their own unfertilised eggs to regain the calcium lost through laying them. The more eggs humans take away, the more their bodies make, depleting their bodies).
