The goal of Safe Grow Zone Initiative is to introduce an ordinance to the City Council, Safe Grow Zone Act of 2012, that would ban the use of harmful lawn pesticides on private and public property in Takoma Park, MD. Serious health risks are linked to lawn pesticide exposures, including cancer, childhood leukemia, asthma, endocrine disruption, kidney damage, birth defects, developmental delays, and Parkinson’s disease. Lawn pesticides are detected in urban creeks and groundwater where they are toxic to marine organisms. Many are lethal, on contact, to pollinators.
