Tell Oregon School Not to Report Sexually Active Students to Law Enforcement!

If teachers and staff in the Salem-Keizer school district in Oregon - which includes more than 40,000 students - learn or even just suspect a student is sexually active, they must report it to law enforcement or state officials.

Not only is this a huge infringement on students' privacy, it will effectively shame students who are doing something entirely natural -- exploring their sexuality consenually with peers of their same age. It will also discourage students from seeking out advice from teachers about safe sex practices, contraceptives, and STDs.

The school is enforcing this rule because according to Oregon law, anyone under the age of 18 cannot legally give consent, meaning all sexual activity between minors is considered sexual abuse. But this school is interpreting the law in a way no other schools around the state are: not one of them has the same mandate.

Laws stating children under 18 can't give consent are meant to prevent grown adults from preying upon young children, not from preventing young people from consensually exploring sexuality.

Sen. Sara Gelser, D-Corvallis, said  she plans to introduce a fix to the broad law in the February legislative session.

Please sign this petition to demand this Oregon school revoke its policy of mandatory reporting about students' sex lives, and to urge the Oregon legislature to pass a law fixing this overly broad definition.
