Donald Trump is trying to silence one of the world's most trusted news organizations. We cannot let him succeed.
The U.S. president is
suing the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) for $1 billion, accusing it of defamation over its 2024 documentary "Trump: A Second Chance?" because it showed footage critical of his conduct following the 2020 U.S. election. While the BBC has acknowledged some editing errors, the facts remain clear: Trump
did try to discredit the legitimate results of the 2020 election,
was impeached for seeking foreign interference in said election, and
helped fuel the violence of the January 6 attack on the Capitol Building and the lawmakers within.
The BBC's independence is essential to democracy. Sign now to demand the UK Government protect it!Trump's lawsuit isn't about accuracy, it's about
intimidation. Trump has a long record of
attacking journalists, discrediting the media, and weaponizing the courts to control the narrative in his favor. Now he's targeting the BBC which is an independent, publicly funded institution that has informed and educated the world for over a century.
This is a blatant attempt to undermine trust in journalism itself. The UK Government has already stated that the BBC is "absolutely essential" to the nation and to global democracy. But words are not enough. The government must stand firm against Trump's legal bullying, publicly defend the BBC's independence, and protect its sustainable funding in the upcoming charter review.
A free press is the cornerstone of democracy and no president, past or present, should be allowed to threaten it.
Sign the petition now to tell the UK Government: stand with the BBC, defend press freedom, and reject Donald Trump's $1 billion intimidation campaign.
