Fire Ryan Tuttle

USM is a space that should feel safe for every student, not just those that it's most convenient to. There needs to be a further look into who we are allowing to handle our futures, and it shouldn't be someone that has chosen ignorance over understanding. College is an opportunity for those with different backgrounds to find communities they can be safe in, this is never something that should come with terms and conditions.

Ryan Tuttle is a psychology professor at USM that has been educating since 2022, and educating at USM starting this year. In his time here, he's used his platform to turn his space into one that his students are unable to feel comfortable in, unless they fit a tight box he's laid out shamelessly. Through repeated usage of harmful language throughout lectures, ignorant speech that has bordered on hateful, and an overall ignorance in issues that should never make their way into an academic setting, he's created an unsafe environment for those involved in his classes. These actions itself have created a need for current and future Tuttle students to reconsider their courses.

Huskies for life is a club that has recently come to attention, a club that focuses in the shaming of women and their choices, under a thin guise of caring about the unborn and expecting mothers. It's a club that claims to care about the 'most vulnerable', though choses to use language that is harmful and non-informative. With a website linked that shares misinformation and hate speech, it's not a club that is aiming to make a safe space on campus. Advised by Tuttle and confirmed by him on his public facebook, this club is harmful and pushes an unfair narrative toward an already vulnerable community. There is a lack of genuine information toward the issue at hand, the club taking the opportunity to use their platform as a vessel to spread hate. As this club was proposed, there had been heavy disapproval in it's creation. USM shouldn't house clubs that can use their resources to spread malice, and as a community, we shouldn't be encouraging this.

You are urged to use your voice to speak up, and break out against what we're expected to take silently. We live in a generation where our voices are more important than ever, and we have the privilege of being able to use it.
