Last chance to save Maui’s Dolphins

Maui’s dolphin (also called Hector’s Dolphin) is actually in endangered and classified « in critical danger » because of human activities.

He lives only in New Zealand but a lot of fishing nets and oil extraction continue to weaken them.

Since the introduction of nylon filament nets in the 1970s, Hector’s dolphin number dropped from 29,000 to less than 7,000.

While in 2013 there remained 100 Maui’s dolphins in the world, three years after (i.e. in 2016), the last statistics are below 50.

At this rythm and without human intervention, this beautiful species, the smallest and rare species of dolphins, will disappear before 2020.

It is highly time to react and finally imagine a pacific and respectful coexistence between men and dolphins.

This why, today, we urgently ask New Zealand’s governement to take his responsabilities concerning this global cause.

In order to guarantee efficient actions, some measures have to be taken, namely :

- Stop net fishing and mining in deep water protection zones. Fishing regulations need to be extended immediately around Taranaki, including harbours along the west coast of North Island.

- Stop seismic measurements within 20 nautical miles around the area.

In addition to this, we ask the Government to help fishers transition to more sustainable fishing methods.

Beyond this issue promoting international protection, these provisions offer an opportunity for New Zealand to promote its heritage and environment, and to act as a fully responsible country.

Thank you for your support and thank you for the Maui’s dolphins. Remember: it is urgent to act NOW!
