Half Moon Bay High has an earlier start time and longer day, 6:40 AM for 0 period, 7:45 1st period, than EVERY other school in San Mateo County. Sleep deprivation in our local schools is linked to depression, poor school performance, suicide, obesity and poor health. It is time HMBHS joins other schools in the district that have recognized and addressed this problem which effects every one of our high school students. We are asking the district to make this a priority and come up with more sensible scheduling for the 2016 school year.
To The Cabrillo Educational District administrators, teachers, and school board:
We, the signers, recognize that volumes of scientific studies, The American Academy of Pediatricians, and modern educational research all support the importance of adequate sleep for our teenage students' mental and physical health and ability to learn. With a school schedule inconsistent with all of the scientific reseach and out of whack with the other high schools in San Mateo County, it is time to formulate a better plan for 2016. We ask for a collaborative, transparent process with parental involvement. Thank you.
