On June 1 2011, the USDA issued an Official Warning against Princeton University for violating the Animal Welfare Act (AWA). Princeton University is one of the worst offenders of the Animal Welfare Act out of all the Ivy League Schools. Detailed federal reports and leaked photographs of surgical experimentation paint a grim picture of what occurs inside the Princeton Labs. Here are some of the violations that the USDA & APHIS inspectors noticed.
- Primates were deprived of water for more than 24 hours
- 1 in 3 primates are missing toes or fingers
- Laboratory personnel failed to notify a veterinarian when a primate exhibited clinical signs of pain after surgery
- Pregnant marmoset did not receive veterinary care when in distress to give birth
- Two primates used in painful experimentation without the use of anesthesia or pain killers
- Poor condition of primates' research environment
- Incomplete and inconsistent recordkeeping
- Presence of multiple expired medications
According to a whistleblower employed at the lab, "the most brazen professor is Asif A. Ghazanfar. He constantly refuses to cooperate with animal care staff, refuses to do things in compliance with regulations and cooperate with required inspections.
