Don't Let Donald Lie: Fact-Check the Presidential Debate!

On Thursday, Donald Trump told commentators he didn't believe the upcoming presidential debate should be fact-checked. Rather than be held accountable for claims he makes, Trump said we need a moderator who will just "let them argue it out."

Donald Trump wants to lie in the presidential debates and we have to convince NBC and Lester Holt to call him out on it.

Not having a moderator check the accuracy of his claims would certainly be an advantage for Trump. Politifact rates 70% of his statements as false, mostly false, or "pants on fire." Only 4% of his statements rate as "true" by the organization.

When it comes to making inaccurate claims in public, Trump has proved ruthless. He claims to have given $102 million to charity, but after an analysis of his IRS returns, this number was labelled untrue and he appears to be the least charitable billionaire. Last year, he claimed that while he was in New Jersey and saw the Twin Towers collapse, he saw "thousands of people cheering." This was also terrifyingly false. In June, he called climate change - the phenomenon scientists are saying is one of the worst crises to face humanity - a "Chinese hoax." Donald Trump's statements are not just manipulations or inaccuracies - they are entirely fabricated.

On Monday, households around the country will tune in to watch Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump debate. This election season has been marked by an unprecedented amount of lies and half-truths. It is critical that Americans are well-informed when they cast their vote on November 8th. Fact-checking is the only way for us to be sure we are receiving accurate and honest information. The American people deserve better: tell Lester Holt now that our first debate must be fact-checked.

Lester Holt did a little bit of fact-checking but did not hold Donald accountable for the many many times he lied during the first debate. Now it's time to ask that Anderson Cooper and CNN do just that by live fact-checking the second presidential debate. Please share the petition today, the debate is on Sunday!
