My name is Eric, and I run I Love Every Dog because I believe every single dog deserves food, clean water, and a safe place to sleep. That is supposed to be the entire point of a rescue organization. So it turns almost impossible to read that a group calling itself Cane-9 Rescue and Sanctuary allegedly did the opposite to the very dogs it promised to save.
Investigators say Cane-9's operators, Jennifer Caneup and Joshua Caneup, pulled roughly 250 dogs out of metro Atlanta shelters over eight months, then warehoused many of them in filth at two properties, one in Douglas County, Georgia, and one in Cheatham County, Tennessee. At the Georgia property, dogs were reportedly living among urine and feces with almost no ventilation. One puppy starved to death. Another lost an eye because no one got it medical care. At the Tennessee property, animals were found among feces, bones, and debris, with vets later documenting malnutrition, dehydration, infections, and parasites.
Jennifer Caneup and Joshua Caneup now each face 16 counts of animal cruelty and 2 counts of aggravated animal cruelty in Douglas County. That is a serious start. But dogs died and suffered for eight months before anyone with authority stepped in, and nothing on the books stopped a "rescue" from pulling hundreds of animals it could not care for.
I am asking Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine to prosecute every single one of those charges to the fullest extent the law allows, with no plea deal that lets either defendant walk away able to run a rescue, shelter, or foster network again. And I am asking Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Tyler Harper to close the gap that let this happen in the first place: Georgia should require any organization that transports or fosters animals at this scale to be licensed, inspected, and capped at a number it can actually care for humanely.
