Give Ross Belsham his job back!

The driver at the centre of an incident that left a five-year-old Queensland girl locked on a school bus for four hours has been sacked by the bus company.

Ross Belsham was informed on Tuesday that his employment with Logan Coaches, in Brisbane's south, had been terminated despite evidence to suggest a series of errors by numerous people resulted in the traumatic event.

"I've lost my job and I don't think I've had a fair run. That's the end of my life, unless somebody out there wants to give me a job," Mr Belsham told 9NEWS in an exclusive interview.

Alyssa snuck onto the bus while the driver was helping other students.

The 79-year-old, who's been driving professionally for half a century, was performing the Logan Coaches school run on January 22 when he collected students from Jimboomba State School.

The first problem he encountered was a lack of teachers present as bus monitors, as is required by the school.

After sweeping his bus to check for belongings and rubbish he exited the vehicle to search for teachers.

"I got out of the bus, went to the back to look and there was nobody there. There was nobody at the gate, no teachers, nobody walking down. Nobody," he said.

It's believed while Mr Belsham was assisting the unaccompanied students, Alyssa snuck onto the bus and went to the back, where she fell asleep.

Logan Coaches fired Mr Belsham over the incident.

When he returned to the bus with the four students he was scheduled to transport, he left, unaware he had a fifth, sleeping passenger.

"I never saw Alyssa get on the bus, I was unaware she was on the bus," Mr Belsham said.

The second problem arose at the Yarrabilba bus stop, where Alyssa needed to get off.

Her mother Bobbie Langford later told police she was waiting for her daughter but multiple sources have told 9NEWS she was not there.

Mr Belsham also denies she was there.

"If she was I would've stopped. I would've wondered what she was doing there and thought where's Alyssa and naturally stopped. That would've been the end of that," he said.

Ms Langford refused to talk to 9NEWS today.

After all four known children exited the bus, Mr Belsham returned to the Logan Village Depot and finished his shift.

He admits he did not check the bus before leaving but says he didn't feel he had to, having already accounted for all passengers.

"I did sweep the bus. It's not that I didn't do, I didn't go back because I'd already done it," he claims.

That error has cost him his job.

When the alarm was raised, contact with made with the bus company but no further checks were made of the bus itself.

Alyssa remained inside the bus until she awoke, four hours after she boarded. When she woke the five-year-old banged on the bus door alerting other drivers.

Mr Belsham was suspended pending an investigation and submitted an incident report. Yesterday he was called into the company office and told he was being sacked.

The termination cites the anger of Transport Minister Mark Bailey over the issue as reasoning for the action.

Part of the letter reads: "the incident is indefensible and no parent should have to experience this avoidable trauma and stress."

Mr Bailey told 9NEWS the issue was a matter for Logan Coaches.

"Every bus company must have the highest standards when it comes to operating their services when it comes to school kids," he said.

Logan Coaches refused to commented on the termination, or claims that other factors contributed to the incident.

Mr Belsham is angry at the way the matter has been handled. He feels he has been made a scapegoat for the failings of multiple people.

"A suspension … that's all it deserves. There was no sacking in it," he said.

The pensioner has been left with no income and fears for the future of himself and his 78-year-old wife, who has health issues.

His biggest concern, however, is the damage to the reputation that he built over 50 years of driving.

"I'd love my reputation reinstated and I'd love a job."
