Turtles Aren't Toys.

This petition was created primarily as a petition to ban the sale of turtles in pet stores.

Pet stores I visit regularly  frequently have a new, full batch of red eared slider turtles available and ready for sale every couple of months. There is no way this many turtles are going to forever homes, and this should be regulated to avoid the constant abundance of unwanted turtles on Craigslist and in our ponds and lakes... I agree with the idea that the pet stores could easily work with rescues to rehome the already present turtles that are in the pet industry. If a strong directive to rehome abandoned turtles from rescues (via standard rescue adoption processes) was given to pet stores, and that these turtles are "sold" in place of the many, many new baby turtles, then people who might actually want and keep these turtles will be the people who end up owning them. Instead of the impulsive buyers who purchase the cute baby turtle that ends up being just some short term novelty.
