It is estimated that every day 5,000 children die from diarrheal diseases, and the resulting dehydration caused primarily by drinking contaminated water. 95% of these child deaths can be prevented by a simple and inexpensive solution - oral rehydration salts. ORS therapy consists of a sugar and salt solution which is offered as a drink to children, and significantly reduces the number of deaths from diarrheal disease.
PSI (http://PSI.org) is a leading global health organization with programs targeting child survival. For affected families, PSI and its partners work together to provide treatment options to save the lives of children who may otherwise die from diarrhea-related dehydration. These options include ORS, and they currently supply these life-saving products in 13 countries: Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Malawi, Sudan, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Haiti, Cambodia, India and Myanmar.
