End Cruelty to Carriage Horses in Montreal Now

This month the city of Montreal experienced another troubling incident involving carriage horses, after a horse named Cocette collapsed on a busy street.

Distressing footage of the incident taken by a witness quickly went viral and has reignited calls for a full ban on horse-drawn carriages, or caleches, in the city. Although a few changes were made to the industry's regulations over the summer, they don't go nearly far enough to protect horses like Cocette who are exploited by this industry. Sadly, she's not the only one who has suffered as a result of allowing this industry to continue to operate.

While some argue that the industry is part of the city's culture and heritage, and that it's a popular tourist draw, opponents have raised serious concerns about the welfare of horses, and the safety risks this industry poses to both them and us.

Aside from the poor working conditions horses are used in on busy city streets, behind the scenes they're also denied the opportunity to graze, play and socialize, and instead spend their time confined to stalls when they're not being used.

It's time for Montreal to join a growing list of other progressive cities that have acknowledged these problems, accepted that horses don't belong in cities and have taken action to ban this outdated industry.

Please sign and share this petition urging Montreal to bring this industry to an end once and for all.
