The satellites are state of the art, expected to last for many years, and provide data that is critical to farmers, scientists, and anyone else with a need to measure carbon levels. But it looks like our idiot president may be destroying them because they were initially made to track global warming:

If the plans are carried out, one of the missions would be permanently terminated, because the satellite would burn up in the atmosphere. The data the two missions collect is widely used, including by scientists, oil and gas companies and farmers who need detailed information about carbon dioxide and crop health. They are the only two federal satellite missions that were designed and built specifically to monitor planet-warming greenhouse gases." (source)
Making this action even stupider, shutting down a satellite properly is very expensive, while keeping it running is relatively cheap when it's already in orbit. So it's not a money saver, it's likely just another step in Trump's war on science and logic, and his unilateral disarmament in the battle against climate change.
