Stop the proposal to shoot and dissect deer for a disease that does not affect humans

https://ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-0154

Please do not use culling as a control.  Chronic Wasting Disease is not transmissible to humans.  There is a humane alternative to lethal testing, RAMALT, that does not involve killing the animal.

Shooting of deer in urban areas puts everyone at risk, traumatizes witnesses, and costs a lot in security.

Autopsy testing should only be used in cases where an animal is found dead, is already killed for food, or was euthanized for humane reasons.

Banning the sale and distribution of animal parts is excellent.

Of greatest concern is the Incident Response Management Plan, and the CWD Enhanced Surveillence Control Zone.  Shooting animals for the sole purpose of dissection is cruel.  Many healthy animals die in the process.

Mass shooting is not the answer.  Reducing deer populations to 2km2 is unsustainable.  Deer are herd animals, and would be picked off by predators wothout a herd.  Deer require socialization with other deer.

Cullng deer around affected areas may not work.  Deer with yet unknown natural immunity may be wiped out through unnatural selection.  A treatable disease, or no disease, may be present in slaughtered animals.

Affected farms, zoos, and wildlife rehabilitation centres should be allowed to quarantine, not kill, healthy seeming animals who test negative with the RAMALT test.  Stop the practice of seizing and slaughtering animals. Humane, medical euthanasia by a veterinarian can be given to animals who test positive through under RAMALT, or who show symptoms.

Wild suspect animals should be live captured, RAMALT tested, and either humanely euthanized by a veterinarian, or released where found.  The destruction of suspect animals should not be done by a hunter.

Wildlife centres should be allowed to take in animals in suspected areas under quarantine.  This would prevent underground rehab that could further spread disease.
