Help Save the Unique Wildlife of Northern Australia from Unsustainable Developments

The Northern Territory in Australia is under threat from unsustainable developments due to the lack of environmental assessments for developments, according to a report on the ABC News Australia website.

No formal environmental impact assessments from either the Northern Territory or Commonwealth governments were carried out on a $130 million deep sea port in an area listed as internationally significant for wildlife, which is already open for business.

The port was opened at Port Melville, which is located on the Tiwi Islands, 80 kilometres off the coast of Darwin. The Tiwi Islands are said to be the habitat of 38 threatened species of plants and animals - the area is an important nesting site for marine turtles, a rookery site for internationally significant seabirds and major aggregations of migratory birds,

The port features storage tanks which can store up to 30 million litres of diesel - the tanks have been installed within an area that the Northern Territory Government has said supports "many species not recorded anywhere else in the Northern Territory or in the world".

The environment of the Tiwi Islands and indeed the whole of the Northern Territory deserves better. Will you join me in urging for an overhaul of environmental assessment legislation in the Northern Territory, a full investigation by the Federal Government and that a full environmental impact assessment is carried out on the Tiwi Islands development?
