Save Horticultural Tech Degree at UNH's Thompson School

As of Friday, March 9th, we have learned that the Dean of COLSA and the Provost are "revamping" the Thompson School, which includes cutting every single program except Vet Tech, Animal Science, and Forestry. Current Horticultural Tech majors believe that a Horticulture Degree is essential in the State of NH, as it's the second top industry in the state.

The Thompson School was originally started for agriculture by Benjamin Thompson who left his land to the state for the establishment when he died. In Benjamin's will, he stated to not let horticulture fall by the wayside.

The Dean of COLSA believes that the Sustainable Agriculture 4 year degree through COLSA covers horticulture, but that degree is more research and isnt like Thompson School's programs. The Sustainable Ag classes aren't nearly as hands on as Hort Tech classes and there aren't as many "real world" experiences. Through Hort Tech at the Thompson School, the very first day of classes are hands on and are more focussed on greenhouse work.

Horticulture is a large part of agriculture. It's growing food for people and animals to eat, growing flowers for people's enjoyment, maintaining fields and trees and treating them for pests and diseases. The Dean believes that Animal Science will cover the law about there having to be an agricultural degree in the state of NH. Although, there is some question if the law states agriculture or horticulture. If we spread the word and petition, maybe we can save the program.

This Friday, April 20th, from 12-1pm, there will be a meeting with the COLSA Dean about the future of the Thompson School as a whole in room 219 in Cole Hall. We are requesting that alumni and anyone who supports or has an interest in the existence of the Thompson School to attend this meeting. Please spread the word about this meeting to anyone who would be concerned with the shut down of the Thompson School. Thank you!
