Stop Kinder Morgan's illegal construction
Kinder Morgan broke the law. This summer, the Texas pipeline company installed plastic fencing in B.C. riverbeds to stop fish from spawning. They targeted Steelhead, Coho, Kokanee and trout as well as Chinook salmon, a critical food source for the endangered resident Orcas.
This is completely illegal. Not only did the company fail to get permits to install the fences in the eight creeks they've tampered with, their pipeline route hasn't even been approved. Even though the National Energy Board told Kinder Morgan these mats are against the law, Kinder Morgan refused to take them out. They have yet to face any consequences for their actions.
Instead, Kinder Morgan has come out ahead, successfully disrupting fish spawning in order to cut a trench across these rivers next year to lay their crude oil pipeline.
Kinder Morgan isn't above the law. We need our leaders to step up enforcement halt all further permits until Kinder Morgan is investigated and held to task for illegally damaging critical fish populations. Sign the petition to tell B.C.'s government to hold Kinder Morgan accountable.
Dear Premier Horgan and Ministers of the Environmental and Land Use Committee,
Your government promised to use “every tool available” to stand up for British Columbians against Kinder Morgan. Yet, you’ve been silent as this Texas company illegally installed anti-spawning nets in B.C. riverbeds and put our salmon at risk.
This Texas-based company has yet to face any consequences for their actions. Even after being caught in the act, they have left in the mats to disrupt fish spawning.
Please hold Kinder Morgan accountable for their violation of the law. I urge you to amend their B.C. Environmental Assessment Certificate and halt ongoing permitting until a full investigation can be conducted into this incident.
Kinder Morgan should not receive any more B.C. government permits if they cannot be trusted to obey the law.
