To: Heads of State and Government
We call on you to make preventable blindness an urgent health priority.
Every year, around 500,000 children in developing countries go needlessly blind. Only 2 per cent of those will receive an education. In some regions, up to half of them will die within 12 months.
We urge you to take immediate action and confront a problem threatening the lives and futures of millions of children.
This issue cannot be allowed to slip to the bottom of the political agenda. For every minute of inaction, another child goes blind.
A global coordinated response could save these children.
The main causes of blindness - River Blindness, Trachoma and Cataracts - can be quickly and cheaply treated and prevented.
But these children need your help to access medication and treatment. Without it, they will lose their sight – often very painfully.
We ask you to make preventable blindness a top health priority. These children need your political willpower to save them from lifelong misery and disadvantage.
Please take a stand. Commit to saving the sight and future of the millions of children facing a lifetime of darkness.
