Stockport Viaduct..Should Stockport Council force Network Rail to clean, and carry out maintenance the brickwork, due to poor drainage, they claim is the problem.

Stockport Viaduct is an historic structure on the rail network, built in 1840,with 27 arches, and at one third of a mile long, the biggest brick-built structure in Europe. The poor drainage on the railway it carries,is causing staining on the exterior brickwork, and according to Network Rail, limestone has leaked through the track-bed, to the exterior brickwork, causing the damage, and staining. There is also a presence of black staining, this may be due to an oil tanker derailment in 1984,where oil still appears to be seeping through,it was last cleaned around 25yrs ago, when oil was present during the pointing work on the bricks..The viaduct is a vital link on the Main line from Manchester to Stockport, and the South, and one of the most recognisable landmarks in the town. The viaduct is a listed structure,so funding by Network Rail,(their infrastructure, and responsibility) and the Lottery Heritage Fund, should finance the much needed work.Stockport Council are insisting Network Rail to do the work, and maintain, and clean it,to bring it back to its former glory..
