Keystone XL isn't the only monster tar-sands project in the works.
The Energy East Pipeline from TransCanada, which would be used to transfer tar sands crude from Alberta to New Brunswick, is a big threat not just to Ontario's environment and Quebec's wetlands, but to our shared global climate. If built, it would be North America's largest pipeline, leading to a 40% increase in tar sands production - something NASA scientists say could be "game over for the climate."
That's because tar-sands oil is one of the dirtiest fossil fuels on earth. And not only does it have an enormous carbon footprint, it also creates devastating cancer rates for First Nation tribes, and its pipelines are far more likely to spill than normal crude pipelines.
Despite these environmental risks, the pipeline would have very little financial benefit. Property taxes in areas with pump stations are expected to increase by $1.6 million, and only 10-20 new permanent jobs are estimated. Additionally, TransCanada has not yet announced whether they will be providing jobs to individuals in the community, or if the jobs will be filled by pre-existing employees.
Tell the National Energy Board to say "No" to the Energy East Pipeline, which puts the climate, landowners, and wildlife at risk!
