Stop Family Separation and Inhumane Treatment of Children in Detention

Fabian* faced threats from gang members so like many parents fearful for their family, he fled to the U.S. with his 5-year old daughter. Sadly, his daughter was taken away from him once they were in the United States. Family separation harms children, hurting their development and emotional well-being.

Tragically, family separation isn't the only harm being done to children by the U.S. government. Media reports and witness accounts that babies and children are hungry, sick, cold and alone are gut-wrenching and unacceptable.

Children — no matter where they are from — don't deserve this kind of treatment!

Urge your Senators to support the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act (S. 2135). This bill would end family separation while also requiring children to receive medical assessments, nutritious food and sanitary conditions.

Subject: Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act (S. 2135)

Dear Senator,

I'm deeply disturbed by media reports about the treatment of children at the U.S. southern border. Children in federal detention centers are hungry, sick and cold. No child deserves that! Tragically, family separation is still happening, which negatively impacts children's development and emotional well-being.

To address these issues, I urge you to cosponsor the Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act (S. 2135). This bill would end family separation and set minimum safety and health standards, so children don't go without soap or toothbrushes. It would also allow for greater oversight of these detention centers.

Children — no matter where they are from — deserve compassion and kindness. The Humanitarian Standards for Individuals in Customs and Border Protection Custody Act would help children receive that while in U.S. detention. Please cosponsor this legislation.
