Tell Vogue Italia: Apologize for "Slave" Earrings!

Vogue Italia's website recently featured a model wearing hoop-style "slave earrings."

When confronted, Vogue first blamed the racist word on an inaccurate translation, then responded: "If the name brings to mind the decorative traditions of the women of colour who were brought to the southern United States during the slave trade, the latest interpretation is pure freedom."

Nothing about the word "slave" represents freedom, and Vogue can't just gloss over their insensitive trivialization of one of the most painful eras in American history.

Vogue has replaced the word "slave" with "ethnic" but this doesn't make up for their misstep: Tell Vogue Italia to formally apologize for their "slave earrings."
Dear Vogue Italia,

As a respected and influential magazine and website, it is important that you recognize the racism of featuring "slave earrings" on your website.

Nothing about the word "slave" represents freedom, and it is inappropriate and insensitive to celebrate of one of the most painful eras in American history.
