Save Wandsworth MOL!
I am a resident of London. I object to the applicant’s appeal APP/H5960/A/11/2156427 related to refusal of Planning Application 2010/3703: Outline Planning Application Springfield Hospital, and Listed Buildings Consent 2010/3706. I do support the regeneration of the Southwest London and St. George’s Hospital mental health facilities at the Springfield Site and understand the need for new facilities for its mental health patients. However, I do not support the magnitude of the development of private housing and the associated changes to and loss of some of the site’s Metropolitan Open Land (MOL). I also do not support the loss of the publicly accessible Central London Golf Course, the only sports facility of its type in central London. Additionally, the proposal to take more MOL from Wandsworth Common for transport further reduces the limited greenspace available in the area.
The applicant’s proposal calls for the construction of a bus route through the MOL (which will be used as recreational space) effectively cutting off a portion of the corner of the park. This is not in keeping with the most important attribute of Green Belts, which is their openness. The G1 bus would run over 100 times a day through the MOL from 6 am to 12 pm and poses a serious safety hazard for both children and adults using the park for recreation activities. The accompanying noise and pollution also conflicts with the public’s enjoyment of the MOL. The applicant’s transport plan states that less than 90 passengers a day will be riding the G1 bus daily. This represents a very small increase in the existing ridership. It does not warrant the construction of a road to run over 100 buses through the MOL each day, eliminating the popular public golf course to create a recreational space that is hazardous to its users.
