Healthy wetlands and streams are vital to the well-being of birds and people. Colorado's new wetlands permitting program, Regulation 87, will determine how—and if—the state protects the wetlands and streams that birds, people, and local economies depend on.
Birds like the Belted Kingfisher need healthy wetlands and streams and will be directly affected by the outcomes of Regulation 87, which impacts the very foundation of habitat for kingfishers and countless other birds.
After the Supreme Court's Sackett v. EPA decision dramatically rolled back federal protections for wetlands, it's now up to Colorado to defend these vital waters. Strong rules mean cleaner drinking water, healthier river corridors, and safe havens for herons, kingfishers, and other birds that rely on these habitats. Weak rules could open the door for increased destruction and pollution of wetlands and streams—some could be lost forever to development.
