Care2 Update (10/2022): After Alec Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Hayla Hutchins on the film set of Rust, her family sued the producers over her wrongful death. Now, they've reached a settlement, meaning the movie will resume production. Additionally, the Sante Fe County District Attorney has hinted that her office may level charges against Baldwin and three others. But so far, it's not clear what kind of investigation has occurred. We must continue to pressure authorities to hold Baldwin and producers accountable for Ms. Hutchins's completely preventable killing!

By now you have probably heard the tragic news that renowned actor and producer Alec Baldwin accidentally fatally shot cinematographer
Halyna Hutchins on the set of his latest film, Rust. While injuries and accidents do happen on movie sets, Halyna Hutchins' death was completely preventable. In fact, it was almost predictable, given that her fellow crew members had walked off set just hours before in protest of extremely unsafe working conditions. Those conditions included three previous accidental gun discharges.

These crew members were immediately replaced with non-union workers who didn't have the same ability to walk away once they observed unsafe practices at the filming site. Hours later, Halyna Hutchins was dead and director Joel Souza was injured.

During an interview after he shot Ms. Hutchins, Alec Baldwin said: "someone is responsible for what happened, and I can't say who that is, but I know it's not me."

Sign the petition to demand a total investigation by the production companies of Rust: El Dorado Pictures (Baldwin's own company), Cavalry Media, Thomasville Pictures, Brittany House Pictures, and Short Porch Pictures. They MUST determine who ignored union crew members' concerns about safety, and how producers allowed this horrible tragedy to happen!

Apparently, the set of Rust was a total nightmare when it came to crew and cast safety. Set employees were required to drive 50 miles after 12- or 13-hour-long work days, a grueling and dangerous request. Three separate accidental gun discharges occurred, resulting in a crew member texting the unit production manager, "This is super unsafe." A different member of the crew said that no investigation, inquiry, or safety protocol changes ever took place after these guns were literally fired on set.

But producers DID call security eventually -- that is, in order to escort from the set the brave crew members who were using their voices to advocate for more safety. Then, the producers brough in "scabs," or non-union workers who have far fewer rights and avenues through which to protect themselves. And the show went on -- and someone lost their life.

No loaded gun or live rounds should ever be anywhere near a film set to begin with. How did this happen?

Well, for starters, allegedly some on set enjoyed firearm-based pastime called "plinking," or shooting cans -- with live rounds -- during breaks on set. Some sources say that one of these guns was then one handed to Baldwin. And the man who handed Baldwin the gun was assistant director Dave Halls, who has a widely known reputation for maintaining deplorable set safety.

In 2019, Halls was fired from another set because a prop gun actually went off, shooting and injuring someone. For that project, "Halls was removed from set immediately," which is a protocol that should have been followed for Rust as well. On another set in 2019, one crew member stated that "[Halls] did not maintain a safe working environment," allowing sets to become overcrowded, with fire exits and lanes blocked, and he completely eliminated safety meetings -- all protocols that are in place to protect lives.

Why was Halls hired at all with this sort of history? And why were crew members ignored when they brought up their concerns? Producers could have prevented Halyna Hutchins's death and Joel Souza's injury. Instead, they chose to prioritize profit, deadlines, and cutting corners over human lives. This tragedy comes just after the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) nearly went on strike because of low pay, dangerous and unfair set conditions, and the lack of health and pension benefits. Although a deal was eventually struck, CLEARLY crew members are still not being protected! Such is the case with Halyna Hutchins, who was an IATSE member.

Halyna Hutchins's death must be fully investigated, and the responsible producers fired and held accountable. Sign the petition to the producers of Rust to let them know the world is watching!
