Tell Rep. King: Don't Understand Pregnancy? Don't Legislate It!
Did you think Rep. Todd Akin's misinformed, offensive comments on "legitimate rape" were an isolated incident? Think again.
Republican Congressman Steve King of Iowa is doubling down on Akin's unscientific beliefs, stating during a radio interview on Monday that he has never heard of a child getting pregnant from statutory rape or incest.
Rep. King must have his head pretty deep in the sand, considering studies have found that at least half of all children born to minor women are fathered by adult men.
Rep. King apparently couldn't be bothered to research the devastating effects of statutory rape and incest before spouting his opinions on the subject. King and his Republicans colleagues clearly want to legislate away women's control of their own health care, but can't be bothered to get the facts straight first.
It's time Rep. King got the message: Don't understand pregnancy? Then don't try to legislate it!
Dear Congressman:
Your comments on Monday that you had never heard of a child getting pregnant from statutory rape or incest were ill informed and incredibly troubling.
[Your comment will be added here]
The devastating effects of statutory rape and incest are all too real, whether you have heard of them or not. In fact, studies show that at least half of all babies born to minor women are fathered by adult men.
Your lack of research into this issue would be troubling in any scenario, but is especially alarming considering the legislation you have cosponsored and voted for seeking to dictate women's access to reproductive health care.
Any decision about a woman's health should stay between her and and a trained medical professional. If you don't understand pregnancy, you shouldn't be legislating it!
Sincerely,
[Your name]
