Urge Lawmakers: Reduce Pollution from Trucks on the Road!

  • par: TakePart

Big trucks move a lot of stuff, and they use tons of oil, averaging only six miles per gallon. They are the fastest-growing source of carbon pollution in the United States. Crazy, right? The federal government is seeking to make trucks more fuel-efficient, but we need you to weigh in to ensure that the standards it develops are tough.

Take action today! Tell the federal government you want strong truck standards that would cut truck fuel consumption 40 percent by 2025 and reduce oil imports by 1.4 million barrels per day.
To: EPA Administrator McCarthy, DOT Secretary Foxx

Freight trucks, which include everything from tractor-trailers to large pickup trucks, are one of the fastest-growing sources of oil use and carbon emissions in the United States. These vehicles move 70 percent of U.S. freight, consuming nearly 2.5 million barrels of oil per day and producing nearly half a billion tons of carbon pollution a year.

The Obama administration has an opportunity to make sure these trucks burn less oil and emit less carbon pollution. By setting strong standards that reduce new truck fuel consumption 40 percent by 2025, we can cut fuel use by 1.4 million barrels per day—roughly the amount of oil we imported from Venezuela and Iraq combined in 2011.

Companies with large trucking fleets should support strong standards. From better aerodynamics to new transmissions and turbocharged engines, a range of technologies can be employed in the coming years. These technologies will save $25 billion a year in freight costs by 2040.

Call for strong freight truck standards today.
