STAND UP FOR HUNGRY KIDS IN MARYLAND AS THEY HEAD BACK TO SCHOOL

In Maryland, just ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the wealthiest state in the nation, more than 200,000 children don't always know where their next meal is coming from—which can severely hamper their ability to succeed in school, form friendships, and participate in activities.

As a proud Maryland resident, I think that's wrong. I pledge to stand up for children struggling with food insecurity as they head back to school—and support the Maryland Food Bank's essential work throughout the year.

The effects of food insecurity on school children are serious and potentially long-lasting. Kids without access to breakfast score 17.5 percent less on standardized math tests. How can you remember the square root of 144 when your stomach is growling with hunger? How can you be expected to perform on par with your classmates when you've missed more school due to illness, depression or anxiety? And how will factors like academic performance and social anxiety affect kids' job readiness as adults?

The Maryland Food Bank works tirelessly year-round to fight the impacts of food insecurity on children and families. Their School Pantries serve families and supply weekend survival kits to children identified as especially at risk. Both their Supper Clubs and Summer Clubs supplement nutritious meals with tutoring, arts and crafts, sports, and more.

Ensuring that every child in our state has access to three meals a day isn't just the right thing to do—it's an investment in Maryland's future. That's why I pledge to stand up for children struggling with hunger and stand with the Maryland Food Bank today!
