Goodwill Industries Violating the ADA! goal: 1,000

Goodwill Industries of North Georgia hired Mark Dumas in 2006. He has mild cerebral palsy and mental retardation. He works on the dock loading and unloading donations and purchases. Mark's father took him back and forth to work and was his only means of transportation. Marks father passed away in December 2008. When Goodwill was notified of Mark's situation they only gave him 3 days off. This was a major life disturbance to Mark and his family and 3 days seemed too short. When the family asked for more time to figure out what to do for transportation he was told 3 days was all that was allowed. Mark's bereavement time was extended a few more days when his father's former employer Holiday Inn called and pleaded for some "Goodwill" to help out the family. After the bereavement time passed Mark relied on the help of family, friends and one co-worker to keep Mark's job going in order to keep Mark in his home. Mark's family requested from Goodwill a reasonable accommodation according to the Americans With Disabilities Act. They simply asked for Mark's hours to be set according to a set schedule so that he would have reliable transportation. His request was denied. Even though it was stated numerous times that it was a request based on the ADA for a reasonable accommodation they denied it and has made it difficult for Mark to maintain transportation. The family is looking for support that includes signing this petition and boycotting and donations to or purchases from Goodwill Industries until this matter becomes resolved. Goodwill prides itself on their website and boasts about helping those in need and helping those with disadvantages. Mark's situation is the complete opposite and his managers should be fired for not complying with the ADA.
