Name a Michigan State Forest After the Millikens

We the undersigned respectfully request that, in light of the historic and monumental contributions of Helen and William Milliken to the conservation and protection of Michigan's air, water, land, fish, wildlife and other resources, the Governor and Legislature honor the Millikens by naming a state forest or state natural area after them.


A few of the contributions the Millikens made to the conservation history of Michigan:


The enactment and implementation of:

    The Michigan Environmental Protection Act of 1970;

    The Natural Rivers Act of 1970;

    Controls on phosphorus pollution of Michigan's waters in 1977;

    The Inland Lakes and Streams Act of 1972;

    The Wilderness and Natural Areas Act of 1972;

    The Sand Dune Protection and Management Act of 1976;

    Michigan's 1976 initiated law regarding beverage container deposits;

    The Solid Waste and Hazardous Waste Management Acts
       of 1978 and 1979;

    The Wetland Protection Act of 1979.


The protection of such outstanding natural landmarks and resources as:

    The Pigeon River Country State Forest;

    The sand dunes along the State's Lake Michigan shoreline;

    More than 30,000 acres of unspoiled natural areas on State land;

    The Great Lakes.
