Nuclear Safety First

I am a twelve-year-old living in Barrhaven. I would like to know why a 50-year old nuclear reactor that is leaking radioactive water, and has leaked radioactive tritium, the cause of which is not known, is continuing to operate. 7,000 litres of radioactivity a day is not enough to shut down the reactor? Not to mention the tritium! And Atomic Energy of Canada, Limited is dumping that radioactive water into the Ottawa River! This needs to stop! One would have thought that the Chernobyl disaster would have been all the world needed to remind it of the dangers of nuclear energy. In response to the inevitable argument that the world needs the medical isotopes produced at the NRU reactor, I believe that the safety of Canadians is just as important. While they are helping save those who currently have cancer, they are running the risk of exposing a larger population with radiation, which often, in turn, leads to more cases of cancer. Please sign this petition to help shut down the reactor for repairs.
