Save Sullington Warren.

Sullinton warren is a 60 acre stretch of heathland and pine wood land owned by the National trust and by Horsham District Council. The local council left it to the Sandgate Conservation Society to manage but recently they haven't been managing it so much as they have been destroying it. They removed perfectly healthy Scots Pine trees in an attempt to join the heathland at the top of one hill to the heathland at the bottom but have since removed all the heather and gorse from the top patch making the whole act totally pointless. In several other locations healthy trees, heather and gorse has been removed, destroying many habitats just to make the whole place more accessible. There are many different species living in the Warren and it is the only known home of one species of cranefly (nephrotoma Sullingtonensis) and has other rarer species living in it such as the Mottled grasshoppers and Tiger Beetles as well as various common birds such as Woodpeckers [all 3 British species have been spotted] and also Nuthatches, Jays, Magpies as well as Tawny owls and Sparrowhawks. Reptiles can be found also, Adders, Slow worms and also the Common lizard although in recent years the numbers of these species have been dwindling. If the Sandgate Conservation Society are left to destroy the Warren then these animals will one by one lose their habitats. Please sign the petition to help put an end to the destruction of the Sullington Warren and to ask the local council and the National Trust to either restrict what the Sandgate Conservation Society can do to the land or stop them managing it completely and let it gradually return to how it would naturally be.
We the undersigned think that the Sullington Warren isn't being managed effectively, and that rather than conserving it the Sandgate Conservation Society are instead destroying it by removing heather, gorse and trees for no reason other than to make it more accessible and with them are removing the habitats of many animals including some rarer UK species such as the Mottled grasshopper and the Tiger Beetle. We therefore ask you to put a stop to the Sandgate Conservation Society managing the land or restrict what work they can do in the warren without having to seek permission first so that the areas which have been managed and then damaged due to excessive removal of shrubbery can regrow ad return to how they once would have been without management. Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and please do take our views into consideration, there are several rare species living in the Warren which need to be protected and this protection cannot happen without good management and conservation of their habitats.
