United Nations: Act Now to end the killing in Libya

  • par: UN - Act Now
  • destinataire: Member nations of the United Nations
Monstrous acts ending in the killing of the citizens of Libya are taking place in Libya.
As defined by the United Nations Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
...and others.
Also, the 1948 General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide recognizes that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or time of war, is a crime under international law, which the member of the United Nations undertake to prevent and to punish.

Now is the time for the United Nations to take action to end the killing taking place in Libya. This can be done by such actions as establishing a "no fly" zone to prevent the use of fighter jets against the citizens of Libya.
We the undersigned:
- recognizing the commitment of the members of the United Nations - Resolution 260 (III) A of the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 1948 -  to recognize and act against genocide
- and recognizing that - from Article 39 of the Charter of the United Nations  http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/chapter7.shtml - that the UN Security Council shall act to maintain or restore international peace and security such as the threat to international peace currently taking place in Libya
- and also, acknowledging Article 45 of the Charter of the United Nations which states that the members of the United Nations shall hold immediately available national air-force contingents for combined international enforcement action
We ask for immediate action be taken by the Members of the United Nations and it's Security Council to act now and end the violence taking place against the citizens of the country of Libya. We urge this for the peace and freedom of the citizens of Libya; for the peace and freedom of the country of Libya; and for the peace and freedom of the world.
