We the undersigned Pakistani Americans, respectfully like to bring to your attention matters that are of the deepest concern to us all. At a time when millions are homeless in Pakistan and the flood victims are concerned about their survival amidst hunger, and diseases, the present regime in Pakistan has decided to erect a monument for Benazir Bhutto for 900 million Rupees (eqivalent to 11 million dollars). The money that is collected and donated to Pakistan - including the one what we contributed to provide relief to over 20 million flood affected people might now be spent on building a statute. If this money is spent in creating infrastructure in the flood affected areas, much needed relief could be provided to millions of people. The sheer scale of building Pakistan is staggering and the country needs full use of all of its own resources and make a better use of the American aid.
We feel that American aid should increase its focus on long term projects to fight the poverty.Those kinds of constuctive projects are unlikely to be undertaken by Pakistan as long as it is under the burden of foreign debts and debt servicing costs-ever escalating each year, which are eating away a big chunk of its resources. It has to be stopped and easing of the loans by the lenders should be seriously considered and acknowledged as a great humanitaian act. We, also feel that our tax dollars being given in aid to the present regime might fall into the hands of corrupt individuals and institutions defeating the very purpose of the aid. We urge you to look into the possibilities of distributing the much needed aid through non-government organizations known for their credibility such as Pakistan American relief organizations working to improve the conditions of the people in Pakistan.
