Ban Circus Animal Acts at Champlain Valley Fair
Sign a letter to stop acts like the "Nerger Tiger and Lion Show"and other Big Top "entertainment" that abuses wild animals.
We the undersigned residents of Essex and Essex Junction, Vermont, ask our Trustees and Select Board to prohibit the exhibition of elephants, big cats, bears and non-human primates within our town limits;
These types of shows are condemned as inherently cruel and abusive by the Humane Society of the United States, the ASPCA, and every other mainstream animal protection organization;
"Entertainment" that features lions jumping through hoops, bears riding bicycles or elephants walking on their hind legs is not "educational," but offers the public a distorted picture of the natural needs and behaviors of these magnificent species;
Because these creatures have no inborn instinct to please a crowd or perform, training them to do tricks inevitably involves bullying and intimidation, rendering animals that are already large and unpredictable prone to aggressive outbursts that threaten public safety;
For all these reasons, we petition our town officials to ban these acts at the Champlain Valley Fair and elsewhere within our jurisdiction.
