Michigan: Don't Weaken Citizens' Rights to Put Issues on the Ballot!

This year, if Michigan grassroots groups get enough petition signatures, they could let voters decide on their issues -- marijuana legalization and banning fracking -- at the ballot. But a new bill could prevent that. Republican lawmakers in Michigan are trying to change election law at the last minute to make it harder for citizen groups to get their issues on the ballot.

In February, Senator David Robinson introduced a bill that would discount all petition signatures over 180 days old from citizen-led ballot initiatives. The bill has passed in the Republican-led senate, and it is now up to the House of Representatives and Governor Snyder to make the final decisions.

Please take a stand for the future of citizen-led lawmaking in Michigan. Urge Michigan State Legislators to vote NO on the bill to discount older signatures from citizen-led petitions.

I am concerned that a new bill could weaken Michigan citizens' power to get their issues on the ballot.

In February, Senator David Robinson introduced a bill that would discount all petition signatures over 180 days old from citizen-led ballot initiatives. The bill has passed in the Republican-led senate, and it is now up to the House of Representatives and Governor Snyder to make the final decisions.

Weakening citizens' abilities to get their issues on the ballot undermines the democratic process. I respectfully urge you to vote NO on the bill to discount older signatures from citizen-led petitions. Thank you for taking the time to read and consider this petition.
