Tell Ontario to Make Big Business Pay For Its Waste

Ontario citizens work hard to preserve the planet, while Big Business, as usual, does as it pleases.

According to a recent report by the Toronto Star "The commercial sector is so bad at recycling that it drags down Ontario's overall diversion numbers."

According to the Recycling Council of Ontario's summary of the recent Environment Commissioner's report, "[business] regulations have been in place since the early 1990s, "...but there is a general lack of compliance."

The summary adds that citizens have met the 2008 goal of 60% waste reduction while, the business "... sector has a very low diversion rate hovering at just over 20%."

The Star says other provinces are taking effective action to resolve waste problems, but Ontario's government has shelved policies that would make manufacturers pay for the cost of recycling their own products.

Tell Ontario to provide incentives needed to make manufacturers reduce waste and create greener products in the first place.
We, the undersigned, ask that your government take the necessary steps to insure that business noncompliance with waste regulations does not cancel out citizens' diligent efforts to reduce waste in Ontario.

According to RCO's director, Jo-Anne St. Godard, the "...Government has made good progress" and "has invested in all of the right tools."  However, she and the Toronto Star say more needs to be done.  The tools need to be used, St godard adds, and the government "...needs to refocus and recommit to its original 60% waste diversion goal."

Mr. Bradley, we agree with the Star's opinion that you must "...make it a priority to get the government back on track to produce a waste diversion act that can actually do the job."

Thank you for your consideration of this important environmental issue.
